My name is Maurice Nicoleau, and I’m a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from New York University’s Silver School. Currently, I work as the Chief of Social Services in Jamaica Hospital's Department of Psychiatry and serve as the Interim Director of Risk Management. I am also an advanced psychoanalytic candidate at Adelphi University, where I perform psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. In this blog post, I will share more about my background, my goals as a psychotherapist, and the teachings that guide my practice.
My Journey in Psychotherapy
As a psychotherapist with years of experience in both private and clinical settings, I bring a unique set of skills to my work. In my one-on-one psychotherapy practice, I believe that achieving good mental health means working toward inner authenticity. My role as a therapist is to help you know, feel, and truly possess your full, authentic self. This way, you can adapt to whatever life throws at you. It may sound straightforward, but simple and easy are not always the same.
Understanding Patterns and Narratives
I work with clients to identify patterns and narratives, exploring how the past influences their present. Anyone can use a stethoscope to hear a heartbeat; however, it takes careful training to hear more. It requires an attuned ear to pick up on the rhythms and sounds that may indicate deeper issues. In a similar way, my instrument is attuned to the narratives that others impose upon us and that we impose upon ourselves. Recognizing these narratives is the first step toward finding ways to manage them and, eventually, to become free of them.
In our sessions, I guide clients to examine how these unconscious influences affect their present lives. Working psychodynamically, I ask how the unconscious aspects of our history shape our current experiences. I then use that information to help liberate individuals from their pasts, enabling them to live comfortably and authentically in the present. This process also allows them to envision and create the future they desire.
The Role of Dreams in Self-Discovery
At times, we work together to interpret dreams. I teach clients to understand their dreams and use them as a means to delve deeper into their own selves. As clients learn to develop their interpretive skills, they gain another tool that aids them on their journey to personal liberation. Together, we cultivate a language that acknowledges the individual client, their experiences, and their goals. This collaborative approach empowers clients to change their patterns by developing a healthier mindset.
This healthier mindset grants them greater agency to pursue what they truly want in life. For me, this is the essence of true health: knowing your authentic self so you feel liberated to move forward.
The Therapeutic Relationship
My hope is that clients will leave our sessions with greater clarity about themselves, understanding their authentic selves more deeply, and connecting with their healthiest versions. It’s always up to the client to define their goals. From my experience, people often enter therapy with specific objectives, only to discover they want to achieve even more.
My desire is to help each person become their own therapist. The long-term goal is to empower clients to free themselves from the narratives that hold them back from living their fullest lives.
Embracing Change
Change can be daunting. It often feels like standing at the edge of a vast ocean, unsure of what lies beneath the surface. Yet, just as the ocean is full of life and possibility, so too is the journey of self-discovery. Embracing change means diving into the depths of our emotions, exploring the currents of our thoughts, and surfacing with newfound insights.
Building Resilience
Resilience is a vital component of personal growth. It’s the ability to bounce back from challenges and setbacks. Just as a tree bends in the wind but does not break, we too can learn to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. By fostering resilience, we can navigate life’s complexities with grace and confidence.
The Importance of Self-Compassion
Self-compassion is another essential aspect of mental well-being. It involves treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, especially during difficult times. Instead of being our harshest critics, we can learn to be our own best friends. This shift in perspective can lead to profound changes in how we view ourselves and our experiences.
Conclusion: Your Journey Awaits
In conclusion, my work as a psychotherapist is centered around helping you uncover your authentic self. Together, we will explore the narratives that shape your life, embrace change, build resilience, and cultivate self-compassion. Remember, the journey of self-discovery is not a straight path; it is a winding road filled with twists and turns. But with each step, you move closer to the true inner you.
Let’s embark on this transformative journey together, and I look forward to supporting you as you navigate the complexities of life.
